11

Dear Johnny,

This Saturday was your Eleventh Monthday!  You, however, are still a few months ahead, and you live it up like you are over a year already.  There's no other way you prefer to move around than by walking, and you walk fast, and you walk far.  And you keep smiling, and you keep making us smile. We call you Orca, because of that.  I just thought you should know.

Fue un buen día

Dear Johnny,

This is how our weekends together are - full of sunshine, laughter, and adventures.  We love you, Orca!  You make our time here worthwhile.

The Curious Case of Johnny the Bearcat

Dear Johnny,

Here are some curious things about you:

1. You are always very puzzled when I change my hairstyle, and you stare at me as if you see me for the first time.

2.  When you refuse to sleep, you get up in your crib and trow all of the covers and pillows over the edge, then you proceed to jump up and down and yell until I come and fetch you.

3.  You love bubbles.

4. You say elaborate "words" but you refuse to say "mamma".

5. You play best not with one of your 4, 598 toys, but with pieces of paper, caps and random things from the kitchen cupboards.

6.  When there's a loud noise, like the vacuum or the gardeners' leaf-blowers, you start singing in tune, as you think that no one can hear you.

7.  You always go for the forbidden things.  You are relentless with the cables.

8.  You get really exasperated when I'm using my iphone while we play, and you try to grab it away from me and eat it.

9.  The first thing you do when you see me in the morning is to give me a kiss.

10.  When I start humming Vivaldi's Four Seasons, you look directly at the speakers, even if they are off, because you know that's where the music comes from.

11.  You imitate the cat's meow quite nicely.

12.  You are infatuated with belly buttons.

14. You have the habit of waving at strangers through the window, and at squirrels and birds from your stroller when we're out walking.

15.  You seem to be always surprised by the touch of your own legs.

16.  You are a big fat jar of awesome sauce.

Daddy Cool

Dear Johnny,

You are almost 11 months and you are changing fast.  The latest thing, aside of your completely new sleeping schedule, and the fact that you are walking  - walking! - on your own all over the place, is that you now play favorites.

I spent the entire weekend trying to cope with your odd attitude.  You looked at me as if you see me for the fist time, or something.  Kind of hostile almost.  Whenever I reached to hold you or to kiss you, you would turn away and hide in your Daddy's chest.  You tricky little hobbit, you!  Exhibiting character, much?  You bet you are.  You are almost a toddler, and I can't even get used to the idea.  You can reach the door knobs, and you can practically feed yourself, and you make your own games, and it's getting harder and harder for Shelby to escape you. It's a good thing that you are so likable, Johnny.  Otherwise I might have felt rather overwhelmed.

I think soon it'll be time to start potty training.  Because honestly, if you are such a big boy, you don't need me to change your diapers.  I am so looking forward to this, my baby.  And to you talking coherently.  I can't wait.

P.S.  I understand very well why you cling to your Daddy so desperately.  He is cool, and he is fun, and he's not trying to discipline you like I do.  That's granted.

It is not easy to be crafty and winsome at the same time, and few accomplish it after the age of six.

~John W. Gardner and Francesca Gardner Reese

Dear Johnny,

You are such a good buddy of all of us.  I must admit that the more you grow, the better fun we have together.  We stack cubes, we roll a ball, we play chase, we hide and seek, we do charades, and we even learn to draw.  Shelby, too, is curious what would you come up with next, and she follows you around fatefully, unafraid and friendly.  What I love best about our games together is that you are so responsive to both praise and guidance, and that you show me that I can trust you to take care of yourself.  You are careful, and when you get hurt you take it well.  It's really such a joy to be with you, baby.  Thanks for that!
